Indigenous Knowledge to combat climate change

Image
Indigenous people are identified in particular geographic areas by the presence in varying degree of the characteristics like: close attachment to the ancestral territories, to natural resources, has a self-identity by others as a member of distinct cultural group, indigenous language. These communities have their own practices. Emphasizing on the indigenous knowledge practiced in agriculture. This research has been out in three different indigenous communities of three geographic zones in Nepal which are:               A Tharu community at Sunad a rpur VDC, at Bardia District in Mid-West ern Development Region of Nepal, This area is at Terai belt (67-300m). A bhote community at Dunai VDC, at Dolpa District in Mid-western Development region of Nepal, this area is at High Himalayan ( Above 3000m)  A Magar Community at Jhulawang VDC, at Rukum District in Mid-western Development region of Nepal, this area is at siwaliks, subtropical zone (1500-2500m). INDIGENOUS TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE Little back ground about urgency and climate change, to act protest, rally might be solutions to share urgency, on times it’s becoming another way to expose and publicize self than issue unless there is critical mass who understands the urgency. The other way could be exploration, discussion, documentation and promotion of the knowledge that helps in adaptation to climate change.  Inclination towards climate change issues and feeling of importance to spread message to larger mass as a change makers: a part of Global movement, with innovative idea of research and promotion of Knowledge that helps to combat climate change. Where ever science talks about climate change first thing that come to my mind is community, its indigenous Knowledge and it's documentation through research. Disseminating message against climate change and sharing importance of adaption and plight of citizen I went to document “Community based Ada

Where are The Mountains? : Article published on Weeklynepal.com

Where are the Mountains ? 0 KATHMANDU :  The mountains- A home to 13% world’s population, a chunk of 24% of global land coverage, a supporting system to numerous ecosystem and people, and a most vulnerable natures heritage to climate change. But still an issue waiting for its turn to be highlighted, an issue waiting to be discussed upon , the place waiting to be conserved, the Himalayas- a place looking for continuation of its existence. And Nepal, the land of mountains, still, a country powerless of raising mountain issues in global platform. Nepal is a mountainous country situated at the central Himalayas has 23 % of land lying in snowline. 3.6% of Nepal’s total area is covered with glaciers and about 10% of Nepal’s precipitation falls as snow. Climate here is influenced by mountains and south Asian monsoon, while Eastern Himalayas of Nepal is considered to be biodiversity hotspot, which indicates to be very rich in biodiversity falling in 25th position globally and 11th p

Water Crisis: A short movie based on the discussion made with local people of Bhaktapur, Nepal  The interview is totally based on the discussion with local people of Bhkatapur. They have been witnessing water crisis since last 8-10 years.  People did not use stone spout (dhunge dhara) and tube well usually for drinking water and household proposes as waster was available in home itself. But now stone spout and tube wells are dried; though there is a little water in some tube wells. Also people have to draw for more than an hour to fill one bucket of water from that tube well and it remains packed throughout the day.  We came to know that autonomous adaptation is done to address the water crisis. They are using temporary rain water harvesting for domestic purpose. To address this issue, awareness programs should be launched by different organization and explain them about rain water harvesting; as this is not seen in Bhaktapur . And the promotion of common storage tank shoul

Women Environment Group

Image
Women Environment group is a non profit, non political and non governmental organization that is working in the field of environment conservation to minimize the atmospheric pollution by involving local people especially women for creating a clean and pollution free environment. The president of the organization is Mrs. Anju Shah Singh who established Nature's Boon's 20 years ago and has been working to collect and segregate solid waste in Kathmandu valley.  It was very pleasing to see women's involved  in creating different crafts out of chau chau and chocolate rappers and selling them at very high cost. When we learn to see value in the waste, it would definitely reduce waste.                 This is a tea mat made out of rappers, one of the example of various craft made by WEG.

Climate change : a story through art!!

Inspired :)

Inpiring day indeed! I feel lucky that i got a chance to translate interviews with waste workers in Kathmandu and was able to gain more knowledge in depth, and also big thank you to Hedvig and Caroline as i was translating their research topic (Role of Formal and Informal sector for waste management in Kathmandu valley). Among all the interviews, one of the most inspiring and awakening interview was with Mrs. Tara Lama and Maya Lama. Boudha Indreni mahila samuha was established 3 years ago with only 35 members and now it consists of 50 members who are contributing for a good cause. They initiated to clean the environment in tinchule 3 years from now, every Saturday they clean their area, ward no.6 which covers large area and difficult to clean. So, they have been collaborating with different youth clubs and other samuha for cleaning activity every Saturday. The most impressive thing about them is they have and have been trying to band plastic in their community. They use newspaper

story of climate change :)

A team work : for creating a art story of climate change :)

Climate Change: is it?

From early days of my B.Sc I have been the acquiring the knowledge for climate change as a cause of all the existing problems such as water crisis, land degradation and so on. It might be one of the factor which has substandard the scenario but not the root cause of all the existing environmental problems. Climate change is a change in the statistical distribution of whether  patterns over periods ranging from decades to years. In context of Nepal the change in the natural system from a decade is more due to human activities such as concrete land, urbanization, over extraction of water, no proper management of natural resource, change in nutrients content in soil etc, which has imbalanced our natural system. Lack of water discharge in the rivers in Kathmandu is probably due to the watershed degradation which has resulted water table to move its position.  We use resources but inadvertently neglect to conserve these resources . Climate change may be one of the accelerating f

RATNAPARK-OUR RESPONSIBILITY

Image
Shocked!! is this how Ratnapark looks ??? i never thought it would be very Peaceful, green ...wow even ponds, fountains though dirty since last 7 years- It was the first time i ever entered in the premises... and i was very lucky because the first time i entered was the first time when KMC restricted the entrance of public. Being at the place was for a purpose, I along with my friend had to take permission for 22 April "EARTH DAY".......as we explained our planned event, we were appreciated by Mr. Hari Kc for a good cause which would help them as well. The Slogan for EARTH DAY was GREEN CITIES this was the perfect place for us to create awareness being power shifters. All done with our arrangements and planned activities, we were all set to value our Ratnapark. The event was supposed to start from 7 a.m, i just could see few people around supporting us, i thought people would be more concerned about this event because it is the first ever cleaning done by any organizati

A Visit to Bhaktapur

Image
Explored Bhaktapur today, was surprised to see those people who were proud of themselves constructing a way for sewage to Manohara River. People constructing a canal kept my eye on, i was curious so i asked them " Is this canal for the irrigation purpose?" and what i heard made me comment bitterly "stone the crows", it was actually sewarage for sewage   way out to  Manohara   river.   I couldn't walk away so i asked them who is actually responsible for making this swerage?,,,,was surprised more with the answer... the reply was "Bhaktapur munipality". While We are trying to change the scenario of Bagmati at the one hand,  Manohara   is being polluted more at the other hand. Municipality itself is deteriorating the environment, instead of finding some solution for the problem they are making a solution of  Manohara  and sewages .Bhaktapur is one of the few municipalities in Nepal where LDF do not contribute the biggest part of total revenue (approx

When will we see value in Recycling materials???????????

Solid waste collected from Kathmandu is dumbed near Bisnumati River by KMC, and then it is taken to sisdol for further treatment but without any separation of non-degradable waste. The scrap owners near Bisnumati says that if KMC would let them collect/separate solid waste at the first point, they can at least reduce about 30 percent of the waste before dumping it to sisdol, they  even mentioned that dump contains valuable waste worth Rs20,0000(per month)which could be recycled, re-used. Well the saddest thing is that KMC doesn't allow them to separate non-degradable waste at first point. So, they appoint many collectors who collect recyclable material from sisdol. The collectors sale it to scrap owners and scrap owners sale it to industries (most of the recycled material is taken to India by many dealers).

At a slow pace but at least it is changing "WE ARE CHANGING"

WE are so obstinate that it is so hard for us to change our behavior and attitude, WE are literate but WE act illiterate. WE always realize it when the things have worsened to extreme condition..........though WE always read" prevention is better than cure". Few years before i could see -people talking about environmental protection, policy etc...But not implementing it when the time comes to act upon it. NOW, Time has changed people; they are aware, awakened, and knowledgeable. I could realize it when i was walking through teku bridge, i had never seen the river clean though it ain't that clean and clear still. Everyone who has passed from that way to T.U(Tribhuwan University) can feel the differences. That place was a favourite stamping ground for Eagles/vulture. Even Baghmati clean up programs has improved the surrounding and bagmati itself. While our visit to guheswori waste water treatment plant we could perceive those good words from Mr. Gajendra Thakur that they

WE ARE AFFECTED.....WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR?

Every day while walking on the roads of kathmandu i always had a curiosity being an Environmental student"why isn't the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the extended road of kathamandu being done?, if the assessment has been done where are the mitigation measures applied to control pollution?". While lately the thing stroked in my mind, at the very situation we need to be concerned about the measurement of air pollution and at which level we are facing it day to day, how and at what level is it affecting our health. In 2002,  at the six stations the deviceS were installed to measure the air pollution parameters: patan, thamel, putalisadak, bhaktapur, kritipur and matsyagaun. But as i am doing a surface research on "Analysis of air pollution measurement devices installed by DANIDA", came to know that most of the devices are not working The following information is taken from ENPHO- progress report(2008) monitoring parameters stations

TWO DAYS CAMPAIGN AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

With all excitement and motivation first day with fruitfulness began from Bhirkutimandap where bus was waiting for all 100 participants. While trying to be punctual i reached before arrival time given by GPS(Global Power Shifter)Nepal team. It was weird to wait for my friends in between more than 30 participants whom i had never met before. Oh! Finally they arrived after 15 minutes thank god. As we got signal that we were about to begin our trip to Nagarkot we were smart enough to step first on the bus.....no doubt that i reserved a corner window seat , a place where i feel good while travelling. Now this is where my story gets interesting. since we were 4 friends, one of my friend had to return to his home for a while due to some reason, but he would be back on his own in the training center, so we were three now, i had to sit alone on that seat ......after few minutes a girl came and asked me if anyone was seating by my side then i replied "no, you can seat".  Now we w

know it!!

Nepal's global GHG (Greenhouse gas) contribution is only 0.027 percent of the world's total. We (least developed countries) are not primarily responsible for climate change but we are victims of it. Now, it's the time to change our attitude and step towards the solution.
